Women across the world are making theatre either because of the wars they have lived through, or in spite of the wars they have lived through.

We tell their stories.  We bring them together.

Project ARIADNE was founded in 2014 by theatre director and The Guardian producer Susannah Tresilian to find women whose work in theatre in conflict zones around the world is changing the society they live in.  The team has grown to include Solène Marié (producer), Carmel England (producer) and Camilla ter Haar (associate). 

Working as Associates of University of Manchester’s In Place of War Research Institute, and funded by the Arts Council England, the inaugural projects for ARIADNE took place in Burundi and Rwanda.    Through in-depth interviews and valuable time spent working alongside with them in the field, two profile films so far have been made giving deep insight into the exceptional work of Frédérique LeCômte (in Burundi) and Hope Azeda (in Rwanda).

These form the first elements of the living archive of female voices we are creating at our website www.projectariadne.com.    As the number of women we meet, film and profile grows so will we create a global network where these female theatremakers can influence, share, celebrate and collaborate with each other - expanding into artistic conversations that can be had online, at conferences, at workshops and at festivals.

WHY ARIADNE?

The name ARIADNE was chosen because in the Greek legend she provided the thread that led Theseus out of the maze.  It seemed to represent a peaceful and creative approach to an inherently difficult and destructive journey.  And, importantly, it offered a way out of the darkness...  

TEAM

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR SUSANNAH TRESILIAN is a theatre director and radio producer for The Guardian Books Podcast.  She has directed at theatres in the UK, Italy, Cyprus, Norway, France, Belarus and Croatia. As Associate Director of Nottingham European Arts and Theatre Festival 2011 and 2016 she works with artists from Kosovo, Serbia, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria.  She has worked for BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, World Service's Arts Hour, has produced international arts documentaries for BBC Radio 4. www.susannahtresilian.com 

CREATIVE PRODUCER SOLÈNE MARIÉ is an international cultural producer based in Brasília, Brasil. She has previously worked in cultural production and administration in France, Argentina and the UK and has worked on projects with countries such as Mexico, Bangladesh, the USA, Colombia, Russia. As General Manager of Cheek by Jowl, she worked on worldwide tours of the company’s shows in English, French and Russian. She gives support to the Brazilian Institute for Migration and Human Rights / UNHCR in organising cultural activities for women refugees in Brazil and is starting a PHD in International Relations at the Universidade de Brasília. 

PRODUCER CARMEL ENGLAND moved back from Australia having worked at Sydney Theatre Company and Sydney Film Festival.  She is currently Head of Marketing at the Roundhouse in London, and is an entrepreneur working across many fields including supporting projects creating yoga for children.

ARIADNE ASSOCIATE CAMILLA TER HAAR is a London based barrister with a practice in international and domestic commercial and public law. Camilla is a theatre critic and contributing editor at Absolutely Magazines (Zest Media) as well as the London Chair of the SAIS Women’s Alumni Network.

PARTNERS

IN PLACE OF WAR is developing a new living archive and social media space.  It is a project based within the University of Manchester that researches creativity in sites of armed conflict and has, over the past 7 years, developed extensive international networks of artists and creatives making theatre, street art, music, spoken word and more in response to war. www.inplaceofwar.net
